Ritual Cup and Ring Vase
Wheel thrown vessel 20cm high. Diameter 20 cm at widest point. Carved raw clay finished with 12 carat gold lustre
High on the fells in Northern England you will find large boulders and sheets of bedrock that have rockcarvings of spirals, circles and cups and rings. These carvings can also be found carved into the rocks in passage graves, on standing stones and across Ireland and Brittany. They date back to up to 6000 years ago and their meanings are not fully understood. What we do know is that they carry the touch and message of those that made them. The sites where they can be found have a feeling in the air that is sacred, their positioning is not by chance but planned to coincide with the cycles of the seasons, sun and moon. They bare the mark of rituals that made sense of the world around and aimed to take control and bring order to the potential chaos that is life.
